What is the best paper for a 4x5 pocket guidebook?
For most pocket guidebooks, we recommend 100# Satin Text for the inside pages and a 12pt laminated cover. This combination provides vibrant color reproduction, excellent readability, and durability without making the book bulky. If the guide will be used outdoors or exposed to moisture, synthetic paper may be a better option for maximum durability.
Why choose 100# Satin Text:
- Durable without being bulky
- Smooth finish with excellent image reproduction
- Reduces glare compared to gloss paper
- Easy to read in bright outdoor conditions
- Works well for tourism guides, visitor guides, and pocket reference books
What Are Some Tips for Designing Margins in a Book Layout?
Margins do more than create white space—they improve readability, give the page a professional appearance, and ensure important content isn't lost during printing and binding.
Tips: Leave More Space on the Inside Margin. Avoid Placing Text Too Close to the Edge. Consider Your Binding Method. Use Consistent Margins Throughout the Book. Don't Be Afraid of White Space. Plan for Bleeds Separately. Think About Your Audience.
Recommended Margins: For many standard books and guidebooks:
- Top Margin: 0.5"-0.75"
- Bottom Margin: 0.5"-0.75"
- Outside Margin: 0.5"
- Inside Margin (Gutter): 0.625"-0.875" depending on page count and binding
